Meet Founder: Sara Tiwari
Welcome to Balanced Bento, where we believe knowledge can nourish both the mind and body.
Growing up attending an international school as an immigrant in Japan, I noticed the variety of foods eaten by my peers, each from different backgrounds. I would bring in my homecooked Indian food and silently analyse everyone’s lunch boxes, or 弁当 (bentos), to see if they met the ideal ratio of macronutrients that I and many others were taught in elementary school. It was a habit I grew out of, however. As time passed and the time available to prepare meals got shorter, I found myself in small but frequent quandaries when I stopped at the convenience store, or コンビニ (combini), for a snack.
On one such occasion, I picked up the packet of 50 g chips as it was right at the entrance and ran out to make it in time for my train. When I finally had the time, though, I read the nutrition information for this bag of chips and realised that this was an indulgence rather than a sustainable snack. It was this small thought — the extra 2 minutes I was able to spare — that led me to wonder the power of the mere act of reading nutrition labels before consuming a processed food.
Hence, the mission of Balanced Bento is to educate consumers about the significance of nutrition labels and provide practical guidance for making healthier food choices in one’s daily life. This project is dedicated to the continuous learning and updating of information; we strive to provide the most accurate and relevant resources to our audience.
